Why Fit Matters More Than You Think

Men's fashion is often about subtle differences that compound into confidence. Of all the garments you own, trousers are the one piece where fit determines everything.

A shirt can be oversized and work. A blazer can be intentionally slouchy. But a trouser that doesn't fit your proportions will look wrong no matter how much you paid for it.

This is why we've built Basics around one principle: fit is the foundation. We offer five distinct fits—Tapered, Skinny, Comfort, Drift, and Relaxed—because different bodies and different occasions demand different solutions. Fabric matters too, of course. But fabric is the second decision, not the first. Get the fit right, then choose the fabric that matches your lifestyle.

The Five Fits

FIT 01

Tapered

The Modern Standard

The fit: Fitted through the thigh, narrows gradually to the ankle. This is the most versatile fit for Indian proportions—flattering, structured, and appropriate across professional and casual settings.

Why Tapered works: The fitted thigh creates structure and formality. The narrowing to the ankle flatters the leg without being restrictive. This is the fit that works everywhere: office, formal events, weekend outings. It's confident without being aggressive.

FIT 02

Skinny

The Fashion-Forward Choice

The fit: Similar thigh to Tapered, but with a dramatically narrower ankle opening. This is the intentional, fashion-forward silhouette.

Why Skinny works: The thigh is fitted but not restrictive. The ankle opening of 12.5" is the signature—narrower than any other fit, creating a deliberate silhouette. This is the fit for men who want their trouser to make a statement.

FIT 03

Comfort

Maximum Ease

The fit: Widest fit with intentional roominess through the thigh and seat. For men who prioritize ease without sacrificing structure.

Why Comfort works: The thigh has 25.5" of room—noticeably wider than Tapered's 23". For men at desks all day, or those who prefer movement without restriction, this is the fit. The bottom opening of 17" is still intentional—not baggy, just genuinely comfortable.

Drift

The Modern Relaxed

The fit: The Goldilocks fit. Between Tapered and Comfort, offering structure with breathing room.

Why Drift works: The thigh is 23.5"—just half an inch roomier than Tapered's 23". That half-inch makes a noticeable difference in comfort without sacrificing the structured silhouette. This is the fit for men who want it all: formality, comfort, versatility.

Relaxed

Maximum Comfort

The fit: Widest fit of all. No compromise on comfort or freedom of movement.

Why Relaxed works: Maximum freedom everywhere. The 27" thigh is significantly wider than Tapered's 23". This is for men who prioritize comfort absolutely, or for physical work where movement matters more than silhouette. Relaxed is confident in its casualness—not sloppy, just genuinely easy.

The Five Fabrics

FABRIC 01

Cotton Stretch — The Workhorse Fabric

Composition95–98% cotton + 2–5% elastane

What It Is

Cotton Stretch is the foundation. It's breathability with durability. Natural cotton paired with a touch of elastane creates a fabric that moves with you, breathes naturally, and ages beautifully. This is the fabric for everyday wear.

Why It Works

  • BreathabilityYou feel the difference immediately. Cotton breathes. Your legs don't feel clammy even on warm days. This is why Cotton Stretch is suitable across all fits—in Tapered fits especially, where the fit is tighter, breathability matters.
  • Natural agingCotton softens beautifully with time. A Cotton Stretch trouser after 2 years of wear feels better than it did new—softer, more broken in, more you.
  • DurabilityCotton is tough. Well-made Cotton Stretch trousers last 3-5+ years of regular wear if cared for properly.
  • VersatilityCotton Stretch works in every climate, every season, every situation. It's the fabric that doesn't force you to choose.

Why We Choose Cotton Stretch

After 30+ years of fitting men across India, we know that Cotton Stretch is the fabric most customers actually wear most frequently. Not because it's the luxury option—that's Cotton Viscose. Not because it's the workhorse—that's Polyester Stretch. Cotton Stretch is the everyday hero. Many customers own multiple pairs in different colors because they genuinely prefer wearing it.

Which Fits Use It

Cotton Stretch works beautifully across all fits. In fitted silhouettes like Tapered and Skinny, the breathability is critical. In roomier fits like Comfort and Relaxed, it provides the natural comfort these fits demand.

Climate & Season

Cotton Stretch is genuinely year-round. In warm weather, it breathes. In cool weather layered under a blazer, it doesn't add bulk. This is the fabric of compromise—not the best at anything, but excellent at everything.

Care & Longevity

Washing
Cool water (20–30°C), gentle cycle, mild detergent. Wash inside-out with similar colors. You can wash after 4-5 wears rather than 2-3.
Drying
Hang dry for best longevity (2-3 hours), or low-heat tumble dry is acceptable.
Ironing
Medium-high heat with steam. Iron while slightly damp for best results.
Lifespan
3–5+ years of regular wear, often longer with proper rotation.

FABRIC 02

Cotton Viscose Stretch — The Premium Breathable

Composition60–70% cotton + 20–30% viscose + 2–5% elastane

What It Is

Cotton viscose stretch is the premium offering. Viscose is a semi-synthetic fiber made from wood pulp—its breathability rivals silk, drape rivals linen, and softness rivals neither. When blended with cotton, it creates a fabric that feels luxurious against skin while maintaining cotton's durability. This is the fabric for men who understand the difference between a trouser that fits and a trouser that fits beautifully.

Why It Works

  • Exceptional breathabilityCotton viscose stretch breathes in a way that exceeds pure cotton. Your legs don't just feel cool in summer heat—they feel genuinely comfortable.
  • Luxurious softnessThe viscose component creates a silky feel against skin. The softness comes immediately—no break-in period required.
  • Sophisticated drapeViscose has natural weight and fluidity. A cotton viscose stretch trouser drapes with intention. The silhouette looks premium from day one.
  • Moisture managementViscose naturally wicks moisture away from skin. In India's humid climates, this practical advantage is significant.
  • Subtle sheenThe viscose component adds a gentle sheen that conveys refinement and intention.

Why We Choose Cotton Viscose Stretch

Cotton viscose stretch is our premium offering—the fabric we reserve for men who understand the difference between a good trouser and a great one. After 30+ years of fitting men, we know which fabrics make customers feel the difference. It consistently gets comments like "This feels amazing" and "I didn't know trousers could be this comfortable." We know this firsthand—Basics is based in Chennai, where heat and humidity are year-round conditions. If you live in Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, or any Indian city with sustained heat and humidity, cotton viscose stretch performs better than pure cotton.

Which Fits Use It

Relaxed fit is ideal. Cotton viscose stretch's weight and drape prevent relaxed fits from looking oversized. Comfort fit works beautifully too. Cotton viscose stretch also works in fitted silhouettes for men who prioritize luxury and softness.

Climate & Season

Cotton viscose stretch is engineered for warm climates. The viscose component's moisture-wicking ensures you stay dry even in conditions where cotton might feel clingy. The subtle weight makes it excellent for winter layering too—it layers under blazers without bulk and doesn't bunch under sweaters.

Care & Longevity

Washing
Hand wash in cool water (20–30°C) or gentle machine cycle. Use mild detergent. Never use bleach.
Drying
Hang dry only (2-3 hours). Never tumble dry. Viscose requires air drying to preserve properties.
Ironing
Use low-medium heat with steam. Viscose can be temperature-sensitive.
Lifespan
2–3 years of regular wear. Viscose is naturally less durable than cotton, but the comfort and refinement justify the shorter lifespan.

FABRIC 03

Polyester Stretch — The Durability Champion

Composition65–75% polyester + 3–5% elastane

What It Is

Polyester stretch is engineered for durability, wrinkle resistance, and easy care. Unlike cotton—which softens with age—polyester maintains its structure and appearance for years. This is the fabric for men who prioritize practicality: businessmen who travel frequently, office workers who need minimal maintenance, and anyone who values longevity.

Why It Works

  • Exceptional wrinkle resistancePolyester's molecular structure resists creasing. You can pack a polyester stretch trouser, travel for a week, and it emerges looking crisp.
  • Shape retentionPolyester doesn't soften or stretch out like cotton. A trouser maintains its fit through hundreds of wears.
  • Stain & moisture resistancePolyester is hydrophobic. Spills are less likely to set, and sweat doesn't leave marks as easily as on cotton.
  • Easy careMachine wash warm, machine dry low, minimal ironing. Polyester stretch demands none of the delicate handling that viscose requires.
  • LongevityWell-made polyester stretch trousers last 4-6+ years of regular wear.

Why We Choose Polyester Stretch

After 30+ years of fitting men across India's diverse climates and lifestyles, polyester stretch solves a specific problem: the need for professional trousers that withstand heavy use without degradation. Salesmen, traveling consultants, and office professionals consistently tell us that polyester stretch trousers are their workhorses. Polyester stretch isn't the most comfortable fabric we offer, but it's the most reliable.

Which Fits Use It

Drift fit is ideal pairing. Polyester stretch's durability paired with Drift's balance creates the perfect professional trouser. Comfort fit is ideal for desk work. Polyester stretch works across all fit types for men who prioritize durability and easy care.

Climate & Season

Polyester stretch is the ultimate professional fabric for any climate. The wrinkle resistance means you can wear lightweight, loosely-fit trousers without looking creased. It works everywhere because it never lets you down.

Care & Longevity

Washing
Machine wash warm water (30–40°C). Regular detergent is fine. You can wash after 4-5 wears.
Drying
Machine dry on low heat or hang dry. Convenience is built in—the dryer won't damage the fabric.
Ironing
Minimal to none required. If needed, light steam on medium heat removes any wrinkles instantly.
Lifespan
4–6+ years, often longer. Cost-per-wear is often lower than cotton despite lower upfront price.

FABRIC 04

Cotton Polyester Blend — The Balanced Choice

Composition50–65% cotton + 35–50% polyester + 2–5% elastane

What It Is

Cotton polyester blend exists because neither pure cotton nor pure polyester is perfect. Cotton excels at breathability but requires more care. Polyester excels at durability but feels less natural. By combining them, you get breathability like cotton but wrinkle-resistance like polyester. This is the most practical everyday fabric for the Indian professional: natural enough to feel comfortable all day, durable enough to last years, easy enough to require no fuss.

Why It Works

  • Natural feel, practical durabilityCotton polyester blend feels more natural than pure polyester but maintains better shape than pure cotton. This balance is subtle but real.
  • Wrinkle resistance without rigidityThe polyester content provides meaningful wrinkle resistance—not as extreme as pure polyester, but substantially better than pure cotton.
  • Breathability with easy careThe cotton content keeps the fabric breathable. The polyester content means you can machine wash warm, machine dry, and require minimal ironing.
  • Affordable premiumCotton polyester blend costs less than pure cotton stretch or viscose, but delivers real value on both comfort and durability.
  • Color & appearance consistencyPolyester resists fading better than cotton. Your trousers maintain color and appearance through repeated washing.

Why We Choose Cotton Polyester Blend

After 30+ years of fitting men, cotton polyester blends are the fabric most customers actually wear most frequently. It's the everyday hero. Many customers have one pair in every color because the fabric justifies rotation. Cotton polyester blend is the blend that doesn't force you to compromise.

Which Fits Use It

Cotton polyester blend's balanced properties make it suitable across every fit type. In Tapered and Skinny fits, the breathability keeps you comfortable. In Comfort and Relaxed fits, the durability ensures the fit holds up. This versatility is cotton polyester blend's superpower.

Climate & Season

Cotton polyester blend is genuinely suitable for every season and climate in India. In warm weather, the cotton content ensures breathability. In cool weather, the polyester provides structure. In humid climates, it handles moisture without feeling clammy. This fabric adapts.

Care & Longevity

Washing
Machine wash warm water (30–40°C). Regular detergent is fine. You can wash after 4-5 wears.
Drying
Machine dry on low heat or hang dry. Many men tumble dry and move on—the convenience is real.
Ironing
Light ironing on medium heat if needed, but often not required. Creases don't set as easily.
Lifespan
3–5 years of regular wear. Longer than pure cotton but shorter than pure polyester, reflecting the balanced nature of the fabric.

FABRIC 05

Cotton Linen — The Premium Summer Choice

Composition55–65% cotton + 30–40% linen + 2–5% elastane

What It Is

Cotton linen is the premium choice. Linen is one of the oldest fabrics in human history and remains one of the most elegant. When blended with cotton, it creates a fabric that's airy, refined, and intentional. This is the fabric for men who understand that summer formality requires a different approach: lighter weight, more breathability, and a texture that acknowledges heat without surrendering elegance.

Why It Works

  • Unmatched breathabilityLinen is the most breathable natural fiber available. A cotton linen blend keeps you genuinely cool—not just "less warm," but actually cool. In extreme heat and humidity, you can wear cotton linen at noon and still look polished.
  • Sophisticated textureLinen has natural texture—a subtle irregularity in the weave that's visually distinctive. This texture is the hallmark of linen's elegance. Cotton linen trousers announce themselves with intention.
  • Lightweight feelLinen is significantly lighter than cotton. You barely feel the fabric on your body. This lightness is crucial in summer heat. The trouser moves with you.
  • Natural wrinkles that enhance eleganceLinen wrinkles easily—but these wrinkles are natural, textured, and sophisticated. An experienced man understands that a cotton linen trouser wrinkled from travel looks intentional and refined.
  • Prestige & occasionCotton linen conveys occasion. When you choose it, you're signaling that this moment matters.

Why We Choose Cotton Linen

After 30+ years of fitting men, we reserve cotton linen for men who truly understand fabric quality. These are our most discerning customers. Cotton linen customers often own multiple pairs in different colors because they understand that this fabric is worth the investment and care.

Which Fits Use It

Cotton linen's lightweight and elegant properties work across all fit types. The fabric's prestige deserves to be worn confidently in whatever fit suits your style.

Climate & Season

Cotton linen is exclusively summer fabric. This is the fabric for May through August in India, when heat and humidity demand a different approach. If you work in formal settings during summer, cotton linen is practical wisdom. For warm-destination travel and formal summer events, this is the fabric.

Care & Longevity

Washing
Hand wash in cool water (20–30°C) or gentle machine cycle. Use mild detergent. Never use bleach.
Drying
Hang dry only (3-4 hours). Never tumble dry. Linen is delicate and requires gentle treatment.
Ironing
Medium heat with steam. Many men appreciate the natural wrinkled aesthetic; others iron to crisp.
Lifespan
2–3 years of seasonal wear. Calculate value in wear-per-occasion, not wear-per-year.

04

Part Four

Care & Maintenance

How you care for your trousers directly determines longevity and appearance.

The Washing Decision: When to Wash

Not every wear requires a wash. Trousers don't absorb sweat like shirts. The general rule: wash after 4-5 wears, unless there's a visible stain or odor. Between wears, air them out on a hanger in a well-ventilated area for at least 24 hours. Spot-clean before washing if you notice a stain.

The Washing Process

Water temperature: Cotton Stretch and Cotton Linen prefer cool water (20-30°C). Cotton Viscose requires cool water. Cotton Polyester and Polyester Stretch handle warm water (30-40°C).

Washing cycle: Delicate fabrics (Cotton Viscose, Cotton Linen) require gentle cycle. Robust fabrics handle standard cycles.

Detergent & technique: Use mild detergent. Wash inside-out. Don't overstuff the machine. Avoid bleach.

The Drying Process

Hang drying is best: Hang dry whenever possible. This extends lifespan most. Expect 2-4 hours to fully dry.

Machine drying (if you must): Polyester Stretch and Cotton Polyester tolerate low-heat drying. Cotton Stretch can handle it. Never machine dry Cotton Viscose or Cotton Linen.

Avoid direct sunlight: Dark colors fade in sun. Dry in shaded, ventilated areas.

Pressing & Ironing

Iron immediately after drying while slightly damp. Temperature varies by fabric: Polyester Stretch (medium heat), Cotton Polyester (medium heat), Cotton Stretch (medium-high heat), Cotton Viscose (low-medium heat), Cotton Linen (medium-high heat). Always use steam. For dark colors, iron inside-out to avoid shine marks.

Storage

Store on padded hangers or fold carefully. Keep in cool, dry place away from sunlight. Use cedar blocks or lavender sachets for moth prevention. Separate light and dark colors if possible.

Stain Removal

Act immediately. Blot, don't rub. Apply mild soap in cool water. Work from the back side. For specific stains: oil needs powder first; grass needs cool water rinses; wine needs immediate cool rinses. When home stain removal doesn't work, take to professional dry cleaner.

Maintaining Shape & Fit

Rotate your wardrobe to prevent over-wear. Monitor thigh and seat areas for thinning. Trim loose threads on cuffs if fraying occurs.

05

Part Five

Frequently Asked Questions

Start with your lifestyle. If you sit at a desk most of the day, Comfort or Drift offers ease without excess. If you're active or prefer structure, Tapered or Skinny works. If between preferences, Drift is the middle path. The only way to know is to try.

Drift is roomier. Tapered is more fitted, especially thigh and knee. In size 32: Tapered has 23" thigh, Drift has 23.5" thigh. That half-inch difference makes Drift noticeably roomier.

Our cotton-based trousers are pre-shrunk, but expect 2-3% shrinkage if you machine dry on high heat or use hot water. If unwearable, contact customer service immediately with receipt and original measurements. To prevent: follow washing instructions for your fabric, use cool water, and hang dry.

Absolutely. A neutral trouser in Tapered or Drift works everywhere: office to evening. Pair with casual or formal shirt. Lighter colors (Khaki) are more casual. Darker colors (Pirate Black, Navy) work equally well.

Cotton Linen (breathability champion), followed by Cotton Viscose Stretch (premium breathability), then Cotton Stretch (natural and breathable).

For frequent rotation and longevity, 3-4 pairs in neutral colors. This allows wearing each pair every 4-5 days instead of daily, which extends lifespan significantly. If budget-conscious, start with 2 pairs in different fits before expanding.

Not recommended if you want maximum lifespan. Trousers need 24 hours of airing. Wearing consecutively accelerates wear in high-friction areas. If you own multiple pairs and rotate, you extend lifespan significantly.

Yes, usually. Standard hemming assumes average inseam. Most men benefit from professional hemming for exact fit. A proper hem hits at the top of your shoe with minimal fabric pooling. Consider this an investment—properly hemmed trousers look significantly better.

Pirate Black or Navy. These work across seasons, coordinate with any shirt or blazer, hide wear and stains, and project professionalism. Start dark, expand to lighter neutrals later.

Blends have different durability profiles. Cotton Polyester Blend is more durable than pure cotton (polyester contributes durability). Cotton Viscose is less durable than pure cotton (viscose is delicate). Cotton Linen is more delicate than pure cotton. Read the fabric section for specific blend profiles.

Hang your trouser in a humid bathroom while you shower—steam relaxes wrinkles. Or use a garment steamer (gentler than ironing for delicate fabrics). For travel, roll rather than fold, then steam in your hotel bathroom. Prevention is easier than removal—proper storage and airing prevents wrinkles.

Minor shrinkage (2-3%) is normal, especially if you used warm water or machine dried. If unwearable, contact customer service immediately with receipt and original measurements. To prevent: follow washing instructions for your fabric, use cool water, and hang dry.

Yes. A tailor can repair most seams and small holes for ₹200-500. Larger holes where the weave is damaged are harder to repair and may not be worth the cost. For valuable trousers, repair is worthwhile. For everyday trousers, assess cost versus remaining useful life.

Cotton linen demands gentle care: hand wash cool water, hang dry 3-4 hours, iron with medium heat and steam. Don't machine wash or tumble dry. Linen wrinkles are natural and acceptable. See the Care section for detailed linen care.

Not necessarily. Cotton Stretch and Cotton Polyester work year-round. However, lightweight fabrics (Cotton Linen, Cotton Viscose) are more comfortable in summer, while structured fabrics (Polyester Stretch, Cotton Polyester) work better in cooler months for layering.
