Men's Men’s overshirts
An overshirt is the most useful piece a wardrobe has added in the last few years — sitting between a shirt and a jacket, structured enough to wear open as a layering piece, soft enough to wear closed as a shirt on its own. Basics overshirts are cut in Relaxed Fit — generous through the chest and shoulders to layer cleanly over a t-shirt or a regular shirt, with a slightly longer body that hits at the mid-hip. Fabric is 100% cotton — heavier than a regular shirt, lighter than a jacket — usually in soft brushed cotton, mid-weight twill, or flannel for cooler months. Designs cover solid for foundation pieces and checks (small, medium, and bolder check patterns) for character. Colour families span beige, brown, olive, navy, and brick for grounded autumn-winter palettes, plus green, blue, and purple for variety. Construction details that matter: chest pockets with structured flaps, horn-effect buttons that don't crack, double-stitched seams at stress points, and shirt-cuff sleeves (not jacket cuffs) so the piece works either way. Sizing is true to the relaxed cut — if you wear a Medium in regular shirts, a Medium overshirt fits correctly with room to layer a t-shirt underneath. Sizing up by one accommodates a sweater or sweatshirt as the under-layer in colder months. Most overshirts in the range are machine-washable cold; flannel styles benefit from line-drying to maintain their nap and shape over time. Chest-pocket flaps button-close to hold a phone securely; some styles add a second internal pocket for a passport or notebook when travelling.

Frequently Asked Questions about Men’s overshirts
What's an overshirt and how is it different from a shirt or jacket?
An overshirt is a shirt-jacket hybrid — heavier and slightly oversized compared to a regular shirt, lighter and less structured than a jacket. It's designed to be worn either as a standalone shirt or as a light layer over another shirt or t-shirt. Compared to a shirt: fabric is heavier, fit is more relaxed, length is slightly longer. Compared to a jacket: no canvas or lining, shirt cuffs not jacket cuffs, buttons not zippers, more casual.
How do I style an overshirt?
The two main ways. As a top: worn closed over a t-shirt, sleeves rolled — replaces a shirt for the day, works well with jeans, chinos, or trackpants. As a layering piece: worn open over a t-shirt or shirt, like a light jacket — particularly useful for Indian shoulder seasons (October-November, February-March) when full jackets are too much. In both modes, overshirts pair with the same trousers and shoes you'd wear with a regular shirt. Sneakers, loafers, or casual leather shoes all work.
What weather is an overshirt best for?
Overshirts hit the sweet spot for Indian shoulder seasons — too warm for a full sweater or jacket, too cool for just a shirt. October-November and February-March work especially well. In peak winter (December-January in North India), they layer under a jacket or coat. In peak summer, lighter cotton overshirts work in air-conditioned offices when worn open over a t-shirt. They're less practical in monsoon rain or peak heat without AC — that's when a regular shirt is the better call.
Should I size up in an overshirt to layer it?
Not necessarily — overshirts are already cut more relaxed than regular shirts to accommodate layering. If you wear a Medium in a regular shirt, a Medium overshirt should fit correctly with room underneath. Only size up if you plan to layer a thick sweater or sweatshirt under it. For layering over a t-shirt or a regular shirt, your normal size is correct. Check the shoulder fit first — the seam should sit at or just past your shoulder bone, slightly relaxed but not falling off the arm.
What's the difference between an overshirt and a shacket?
"Shacket" is shorthand for shirt-jacket — the same category as overshirt. Some retailers use "shacket" to mean the thicker, heavier end of the range (closer to a jacket), while "overshirt" implies a slightly lighter weight (closer to a shirt). At Basics, the terms are used interchangeably — what matters is the actual fabric weight on the product page (lighter weights for spring/monsoon layering; heavier flannel weights for winter).
Can I wear an overshirt to office?
Depends on the workplace and the overshirt. A solid-colour overshirt in a clean neutral (navy, olive, brown) worn closed over a t-shirt works in smart-casual offices — it reads like a slightly more relaxed shirt. Checked overshirts and brighter colours read more casual and suit creative and tech offices better than traditional ones. Pair with chinos or dark jeans, not joggers. For client-facing days, a regular shirt or blazer is the safer call.
