For Office
Authority, year-round.
A shirt's fit, weave, and pattern work together to determine how it looks, feels, and performs. This guide explores the structural choices that define your comfort, style, and durability — the details most men miss.
Beyond Colour & Size
Most men focus only on colour and size, missing the technical details that separate a great shirt from an average one. A shirt is the intersection of three independent choices — how it fits your body, what it's woven from, and what it looks like.
At Basics, we've spent 30+ years perfecting these choices. Across 123+ stores in South India, we don't just stock sizes — we stock silhouettes designed for Indian bodies and Indian climates. Master fit, weave, and pattern, and you'll never buy a shirt that doesn't work for you.
The Basics view
Fit and weave are engineering. Pattern is personality. Get all three right and the shirt does the work for you — in summer heat, monsoon humidity, or an air-conditioned office.
Part One
A shirt's fit determines how it drapes on your body — how you appear in photographs, how you feel through the day, how you move. Most men think "size" and "fit" are the same thing. They're not. You can be a Medium in Slim fit and an XL in Relaxed fit; the silhouette, not the label, is what matters.
FIT 01
Our Slim Fit is engineered for men who value structure. The shoulders are trimmed narrower than many other cuts, the chest sits snugly against the frame (not tight, but not loose), and the waist follows the torso. The key characteristic: about a 2-inch difference between chest and waist creates a slight taper and a clean, defined silhouette. The sleeves are narrower too, preventing the billowing that looser fits have.
The fitted baseline for most men
Slim Fit reads as intentional and put-together — wear it to work, to dinner, or to professional social events. Tip: sizing up within Slim creates a more relaxed silhouette without losing the contoured cut.

Our Relaxed Fit is built for real life — comfort first, aesthetics second. The shoulders are fuller, giving room across the upper back; the chest has significant room so you can move your arms freely; and the waist stays nearly parallel to the chest instead of tapering inward. There's only about a 1-inch chest-to-waist difference — an almost-straight cut. Sleeves are wider too, for full freedom of movement.
Comfort, by design
Relaxed Fit communicates "I prioritise comfort." Tip: sizing down within Relaxed creates a more tapered look without losing the ease. In winter it can feel unnecessarily loose — that's where Slim earns its keep.

FIT GUIDE
There's no "right" answer — it's about what feels and looks good on your body. Think about three practical factors:
Many men own both
You might wear Slim Fit to the office on a winter Monday and Relaxed Fit on a casual summer Saturday. Each fit has its place in a complete wardrobe. Available online and in all 123+ Basics stores across South India.

Part Two
A weave is the pattern in which threads are interlaced to create fabric. Two shirts made from identical cotton can feel and perform completely differently based on their weave — it determines breathability, durability, wrinkle resistance, and how the fabric drapes. A tight weave traps heat and resists wrinkling; a loose weave lets air pass through; a structured weave feels crisp and formal; a soft weave feels casual. This is the engineering beneath the surface.
WEAVE 01
Plain weave is the simplest and most common pattern: each warp thread crosses over one weft thread and under the next, creating a checkerboard at the microscopic level. It's neutral, versatile, and reliable — our workhorse weave, and what most of our bestsellers are made from.
Versatile, neutral, the everyday choice.
WEAVE 02
Oxford weave crosses two weft threads over one warp thread, creating a visible "basket-like" surface texture. The result is a heavier, more structured fabric with a more formal appearance than plain weave. Basics has built its office reputation on Oxford — customers trust it for boardrooms across India.
Structured, formal, the office reputation.
WEAVE 03
Twill weaves the warp and weft into visible diagonal lines. It's one of the strongest weaves because the diagonal pattern distributes stress evenly. Our Twill shirts outlast every other weave — men from Basics stores report wearing the same Twill for 5+ years.
Diagonal pattern, built to last 5+ years.
Dobby weave uses a small loom attachment to create recurring geometric patterns — checks, dots, or lines — woven directly into the fabric. Unlike prints, dobby patterns are structural, so they won't fade. Basics uses Dobby for men who want pattern without shouting: personal style, not a fashion statement.
Subtle patterns, personal style.
WEAVE 05
Fil-à-Fil (French for "thread-by-thread") weaves alternating shades of the same colour, creating a subtle striped appearance — refined and textured without being obvious. In South Indian summers it's the go-to choice; our stores sell through entire batches in April–June.
Summer staple, breathable, heat-tested.
Herringbone creates a distinctive V-shaped zigzag by reversing the diagonal direction every few rows — a more complex, visually striking fabric. Basics reserves Herringbone for occasions that matter: weddings, client dinners, moments of impact.
Distinctive, for occasions that matter.
WEAVE 07
Crepe weave uses highly twisted yarns to create a crinkled, bumpy surface texture — a casual, distinctive fabric with natural movement. Our Crepe is designed for weekends and monsoons, the two seasons when comfort beats everything.
Breathable, casual, monsoon-ready.
WEAVE 08
Poplin is a variation of plain weave using finer warp threads and thicker weft threads, creating a subtle horizontal ridge. The result is smooth, lightweight, and refined. Basics created Poplin for formal occasions where you don't want to sweat — client meetings in summer, weddings in May.
Smooth, lightweight, formal summer wear.
WEAVE 09
Satin weave intersects warp and weft minimally, creating a smooth, lustrous surface — a shiny, luxurious-feeling fabric, but delicate. Basics keeps Satin in limited stock: it's for rare occasions, not everyday wear.
Rare, luxury, special events.
WEAVE 10
Corduroy creates prominent vertical ribs by using an additional yarn that's later cut to create the nap (fuzzy texture). It's thick, textured and distinctive. Our Corduroy is for men with confidence — it's a bold choice, and Basics' stores know exactly who wants it.
Why choose Basics
30+ years. 123+ stores across South India. Every weave tested in actual Indian climates — summer heat, monsoon humidity, winter indoors. This isn't theory; it's lived experience.
Warm, distinctive, winter wear.
Part Three
A pattern is the visual design on a shirt — plain, checks, stripes, prints, or woven textures. Pattern determines how formal or casual the shirt reads, which occasions it works for, and how visible it is in photographs. Fit and weave are structural. Pattern is personality. The rule: the simpler your life context, the bolder your pattern can be; the more structured your context, the more neutral your pattern should be.
PATTERN 01
Plain/Solid shirts have no pattern — just uniform colour from collar to hem. This is the foundation. Plain works everywhere because it doesn't distract from fit, weave, or context; it adapts to whatever you pair it with. Basics' Plain shirts are the backbone of every wardrobe: no distractions, pure silhouette.
Universal choice, foundation pieces, office essentials.
PATTERN 02
Checks are a grid of intersecting lines forming squares — gingham (small), tattersall (medium), and window checks (large). They add structure and formality without being loud. Checks are Basics' office tradition: our customers know that if you need authority, wear checks.
Office authority, professional tradition, structured formality.
PATTERN 03
Stripes are parallel lines — vertical (most common), horizontal, or diagonal. They add visual interest and make you appear slimmer: more subtle than checks but more interesting than plain. At Basics, stripes are for men who want to be seen without shouting.
Subtle pattern, office-to-casual versatility, slimming visual.
PATTERN 04
Prints are graphics, designs, logos, or artistic elements printed onto fabric — florals, abstracts, brand logos, vintage and modern graphics. They're the loudest pattern choice. Basics' Prints are for personalities, not wallflowers: when you wear a print, you're saying something.
Personality expression, weekend wear, creative contexts.
PATTERN 05
Self patterns occur when the weave structure itself creates a visual pattern — without printed graphics or coloured-thread variations. Subtle texture that reads as solid from a distance but has depth up close. Self patterns are Basics' hidden sophistication: the weave IS the pattern.
Pattern + Fit + Weave = the complete shirt
Every shirt is the intersection of three choices: how it fits your body, what it's made of, and what it looks like. Master these three layers and you'll never buy a shirt that doesn't work for you.
Woven sophistication, professional depth, hidden elegance.
Part Four
A shirt isn't just fabric. It's the intersection of fit, weave, and pattern — three independent choices that determine how you look, feel, and move through the world. Here's the framework, distilled.
Authority, year-round.
Comfort first.
Breathability above all.
Warmth and structure.
The Basics difference — 30+ years, 123+ stores
We've tested every weave in Indian heat, monsoon humidity, and air-conditioned offices. We've seen which fits work for which bodies and which patterns read as "intentional" rather than "confused." This isn't theory from mills or magazines — it's lived experience from three decades across South India. Find your perfect shirt.
Part Six
Size is the label; fit is the silhouette. You can be a Medium in Slim fit and an XL in Relaxed fit. Slim tapers at the waist and sits closer to the body; Relaxed runs nearly straight with generous room throughout. Choose the silhouette that suits your build and how you like to feel, then pick the size within that fit.
Narrow or average shoulders and a preference for a tailored look point to Slim Fit; broader frames or a comfort-first preference point to Relaxed Fit. Slim layers well and works year-round in AC; Relaxed keeps you cooler outdoors in summer and monsoon. Many men own both.
Because of the weave. Two shirts made from identical cotton can perform completely differently based on how the warp and weft threads interlace. A tight weave traps heat and resists wrinkling; a loose weave lets air pass through; a structured weave feels crisp; a soft weave feels casual. Weave determines breathability, durability, wrinkle resistance, and drape.
Twill is one of the most durable, with men reporting 5–7+ years of wear thanks to its diagonal structure spreading stress evenly. Oxford, Dobby, Herringbone, and Corduroy are also excellent for durability. Crepe, Poplin, and Satin are more delicate.
Plain and Checks read formal and professional, Stripes are versatile, and Self patterns add quiet sophistication. Save Prints for casual and creative settings.
A self pattern is woven into the structure of the fabric, so it never fades and reads as solid from a distance with depth up close. A print is applied to the surface, so it's bolder and more expressive but fades over time. Self patterns are professional and subtle; prints are personality-forward and casual.
Every fit, weave, and pattern is available online at basicslife.com and across 123+ Basics stores in South India. Our store staff can help you feel each weave and try on both fits, so you can choose what works for your climate and occasions.
