Plain Shirts for Men

Plain shirts for men, also called solid shirts, are one colour from collar to hem. They are the easiest shirts to wear: smart for the office, clean for a wedding and simple for the weekend, and they go with almost any trousers.

Colours. Blue, navy and white are our biggest groups, followed by black, maroon and wine, and olive green. We also have grey, beige, khaki and pink plain shirts.

Fabric and texture. A plain shirt doesn't have to look flat. Cotton twill has a fine diagonal line, oxford a soft basket texture and crepe a light crinkle. Dobby and fil-a-fil weave a tiny texture into the cloth, so the colour looks richer up close. Stretch fabrics move with you through a long day, and cotton linen is cooler for summer.

Fit and sleeve. Almost all our plain shirts are slim fit: tapered at the waist and neat through the shoulders. A few come in relaxed fit, with more room through the body. Choose full sleeve for work and events, and half sleeve plain shirts for hot days.

How to wear them. A white, light blue or navy plain shirt tucked into grey, beige or navy trousers is right for most offices. Black and maroon look sharp in the evening. Wear plain shirts with checked or textured trousers if you like, or keep it simple with jeans and chinos.

Care. Every Basics shirt is pre-shrunk. Wash plain shirts with similar colours in cold water, dry them in the shade, and iron on medium heat.

Plain Shirts for Men: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a plain shirt?
A plain shirt, also called a solid shirt, is a shirt in one colour with no checks, stripes or print. Some have a fine woven texture, like oxford or dobby, but still read as one colour.
Which plain shirt colours should I buy first?
Start with white, light blue and navy: they suit the office, weddings and weekends. Then add black for evenings and an olive or maroon shirt for casual wear.
Are plain shirts good for the office?
Yes. White, light blue, grey and navy plain shirts are the safest office shirts. Tuck them into plain trousers and they work with or without a blazer.
What pants go with a plain shirt?
Almost anything. Navy, grey, beige and black trousers suit most colours, and jeans or chinos work for casual days. A plain shirt also lets you wear checked trousers without clashing.
What is the difference between plain and solid shirts?
None. Plain shirts and solid shirts are two names for the same thing: a shirt in a single colour.
Can I wear a plain shirt to a wedding?
Yes. A crisp white, light blue or maroon plain shirt with tailored trousers and a blazer is a smart wedding look.
Do plain shirts show creases more?
Smooth fabrics show creases more than textured ones. Twill, oxford, dobby and stretch fabrics hide creases better, and all our shirts are pre-shrunk so they keep their size.
Can I try a plain shirt in a store?
Yes. On each shirt's page, tap Find in Store to see which Basics Life store near you has your size.
