Trousers for Men: Fits, Fabrics & Sizes

Trousers and pants for men for work, weekends and weddings: formal pants and casual trousers in five fits: tapered, drift, skinny, comfort and relaxed.

Choosing trousers for men comes down to two things: how much room you want through the hip and thigh, and how the leg falls to the ankle. Basics trousers come in five fits: Tapered, Skinny, Drift, Comfort and Relaxed.

In size 32: Tapered is fitted through the thigh (23") and narrows to a 13.5" bottom opening. It's our largest range and the one to pick if you're unsure. Skinny has a similar thigh (22.75") with the narrowest opening, 12.5". Drift is half an inch roomier than Tapered (23.5" thigh, 14" opening): structure with breathing room. Comfort gives real room through the thigh and seat (25.5" thigh, 17" opening). Relaxed is the widest of all (27" thigh, 18" opening).

Length. Each fit has a set outseam (waistband to hem): Tapered and Drift 41", Skinny 39½", Comfort and Relaxed 42". The inseam is longest on the smallest waist and shortens as the waist goes up. In Tapered, for example, it's 34" at waist 28 and 30⅞" at waist 42. Comfort comes flat-front or pleated.

Fabric. Most of the range is Cotton Stretch: cotton with 2–5% elastane that breathes and moves with you. For the office there is Polyester Stretch, which resists wrinkles, and Cotton Polyester blends. Cotton Viscose Stretch is the softer, premium option, and Cotton Linen is for the hottest months.

Every pair runs waist 28 to 42. For office wear, navy and grey take the most rotation, with beige and olive adding warmth to a brown-shoe wardrobe.

Trousers for Men: Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Tapered, Skinny, Drift, Comfort and Relaxed fit?
Basics trousers come in five fits. In size 32: Tapered is fitted through the thigh (23") and narrows to a 13.5" opening, our largest range and the safest first choice. Skinny has a similar thigh with the narrowest opening (12.5"). Drift is half an inch roomier than Tapered (23.5" thigh, 14" opening). Comfort gives room through the thigh and seat (25.5", 17" opening) and comes flat-front or pleated. Relaxed is the widest (27", 18" opening). Outseams: Tapered and Drift 41", Skinny 39½", Comfort and Relaxed 42". Pick by how much room you want through the thigh first, then by how narrow you like the ankle.
Which pants for men work for office or formal wear?
For meetings and formal events, choose Tapered or Drift in Polyester Stretch or a Cotton Polyester blend, in neutral colours, or Cotton Linen for summer formal events. For everyday office days you're sitting most of the time, so Comfort or Drift in a Cotton Polyester blend or Cotton Stretch works best, in black, navy, grey, khaki or sage. If you travel for work, Drift or Comfort in Polyester Stretch resists wrinkles best.
How should men's trousers fit at the waist and length?
The waistband should sit at your natural waist or just below, snug enough to stay up without a belt for a few minutes. Length should be a "slight break" — the fabric just touching the top of your shoe with a small fold, no pooling at the ankle. For tapered and skinny fits, many guys prefer no break (hem ends at the ankle bone). If you wear formal shoes regularly, slightly longer; for sneakers, slightly shorter. Every Basics trouser runs waist 28 to 42. In Tapered, the inseam is 34" at waist 28 and 30⅞" at waist 42; Skinny runs shorter, 31½" down to 28⅛".
Are Basics trousers chinos?
Most of them are. A chino is a flat-front cotton trouser cut for everyday wear, and that describes the bulk of this range: Cotton Stretch with 2–5% elastane, flat front, no pleats, in beige, olive, grey, navy and brown. The Polyester Stretch and Cotton Polyester office trousers are the exception: same flat front, dressier cloth.
Are linen trousers good for Indian summers?
Yes — linen is one of the most breathable fabrics available and an obvious choice for April-June in most of India and year-round in coastal cities. Pure linen wrinkles more than cotton (this is the trade-off for the breathability) but the texture is part of the appeal. If you want the cooling effect without the heavy rumple, a cotton-linen blend gives you most of the breathability with far less of the wrinkling, and that is what our cotton-linen twills are.
Flat-front or pleated trouser — which to pick?
Flat-front trousers have a clean front with no folds at the waistband — the modern default, leaner silhouette, works for office and casual. Pleated trousers have one or two folds at the front waistband for extra room through the seat and thigh — a more traditional look, also more comfortable if you have larger thighs or sit a lot. At Basics, flat front is the default across every fit; Comfort Fit is the one that also comes pleated.
Should the trouser hem have a cuff (turn-up) or be plain?
Plain hem (no cuff) is the modern default — cleaner line, works with both formal and casual. Cuffed hem (a 3-4cm fold at the bottom) is a classic detail that adds visual weight, traditionally paired with pleated fronts. For most casual and office trousers, plain hem. Cuffs work best on heavier formal trousers and look out of place on lighter linen or chino-weight fabrics. If buying online, plain hem is the safer default.
Which trousers and pants are best for hot weather?
Cotton Linen is the most breathable, followed by Cotton Viscose Stretch, then Cotton Stretch.
What's the best colour for a first trouser?
Black or navy. They work across seasons, go with any shirt or blazer, hide wear and stains, and look professional. Start dark, then add lighter neutrals like khaki and beige.
