Shirts for Men: Fabrics, Fits & Collars

Shirts for men are the most worked piece in any wardrobe: worn to the office on Monday, untucked over a tee on Saturday, and to a wedding by Sunday evening. Every Basics shirt is a casual shirt: smart enough for a casual office, easy enough for the weekend. The Basics shirt range is built around that reality. You'll find shirts in two fits: Slim Fit, cut closer through the chest and waist for a tailored look, and Relaxed Fit, with more room through the body for everyday ease. Most shirts are full sleeve, and there are half-sleeve shirts for hot days and casual wear. Fabrics span 100% cotton for breathable office wear, cotton-linen and viscose-linen blends for the hottest months in Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi summers, which breathe better than pure cotton and crease less than pure linen, plus soft cotton-viscose and viscose shirts that drape well. Designs cover the full range — crisp white solids for formal occasions, fine checks for smart-casual days, stripes for quiet polish, prints when you want something more, and textured weaves (jacquard, dobby, herringbone) that elevate a solid without competing with it. Every Basics shirt is pre-shrunk, finished with crack-resistant buttons, and reinforced at the placket and cuffs — small details that decide whether a shirt looks good at year three or just at week three. Colours run from foundation whites and office blues to navy, maroon, olive, teal and pink. Collars come in three styles: Mid Cut Away, the everyday collar that works with or without a tie; Hamilton, a wide spread for ties and formal wear; and Stylized collars for weekends. Every shirt comes in sizes XS to XXXL. All shirts ship pre-pressed and folded — they're ready out of the bag, with a quick steam to refresh the creases from packaging if you need it. Free pan-India shipping, 30-day no-questions returns.

Types of Shirts for Men

Find Your Shirt Size

Basics shirts are labelled by size and number: XS/38, S/39, M/40, L/42, XL/44, XXL/46 and XXXL/48. So a 38 is our XS, a 40 is our Medium and a 42 is our Large. Measure your chest at the widest point, arms relaxed, and pick that number. The shirt itself measures larger for ease: in Slim fit, a Medium is 44" around the chest, and Relaxed is 3" fuller at every size. The shoulder seam should sit on your shoulder bone, and the cuff should end just past your wrist.

Shirts for Men: Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Slim Fit and Relaxed Fit shirts at Basics?
Slim Fit shirts are tapered through the chest, waist, and arms for a closer, more tailored silhouette — best if you prefer your shirt to follow your body shape and like to tuck in. Relaxed Fit shirts have more room through the chest and waist and a slightly straighter cut, sitting comfortably whether tucked or untucked. Slim Fit reads more dressed-up; Relaxed Fit reads more casual. Both use the same fabric quality and construction.
What are casual shirts for men?
Casual shirts are collared, button-front shirts made for everyday wear rather than for suits and ties: checks, stripes, prints and plain colours in cotton, linen and viscose. Every Basics shirt is a casual shirt. Wear one tucked into chinos for a casual office, or untucked with jeans at the weekend.
Which shirt fabric is best for Indian weather?
For most of the year across most of India, 100% cotton is the right default: it breathes well and softens with every wash. For peak summer (April–June) and hot cities like Chennai, Mumbai and Goa, cotton-linen and viscose-linen blends are noticeably cooler, and they crease less than pure linen. For air-conditioned offices, cotton works year-round.
How do I pick the right shirt size?
Measure your chest at the widest point with your arms relaxed, then pick the matching Basics size: XS/38, S/39, M/40, L/42, XL/44, XXL/46 or XXXL/48. If you're between sizes, or want more room, size up in Slim or choose Relaxed fit, which is 3" fuller in the chest at every size. The shoulder seam should sit on your shoulder bone, and the cuff should end just past your wrist.
Is shirt size 38 medium or large?
At Basics, 38 is our XS. A Medium is 40 and a Large is 42, and the full range runs XS/38 to XXXL/48. Sizes vary between brands, so check the measurements in the size guide above before you order.
How do I care for a Basics shirt so it lasts?
Wash cold (30°C max) on a gentle cycle. For the first two washes, separate from other colours to prevent any transfer. Skip the dryer — hang-dry in shade. For cotton and cotton blends, iron on medium heat while slightly damp. For pure linen, embrace the natural rumple or steam-press. Don't wring or scrub. Stored on hangers (not folded), a Basics shirt holds its shape and colour for years.
Which shirt collar should I choose?
Mid Cut Away is the everyday collar: a moderate spread that looks right with or without a tie, for office and weekend. Hamilton has a wide spread built for ties and formal occasions. Stylized collars are design-led, for weekends and evenings. If you're buying one shirt for everything, choose Mid Cut Away.
How do I match a shirt with the right trouser?
A few rules. White shirt goes with anything. Light blue with grey, beige, or navy. Pink or pastel shirts with grey or navy (not black). Checked shirts pair with solid trousers (avoid pattern clash). Linen shirt + linen trouser only if both are in similar weights and colours (or it reads as a beach set). For formal wear, match fabric weight to fabric weight — heavier shirts with structured trousers, lighter shirts with summer trousers.
How many types of shirts are there for men?
By design: plain, check, striped and printed shirts. By sleeve: full sleeve and half sleeve. By occasion: casual shirts and formal shirts (usually a wide Hamilton collar for ties). By fabric: cotton, linen blends, viscose and polyester stretch. By fit: slim and relaxed. Every one of these types except formal shirts is in the Basics range, and the "Types of shirts for men" list above links to each.
Which brand shirt is best for men?
The best shirt is the one whose fit, fabric and finishing suit you, so check those before the brand name. Basics has been making men's shirts since 1995. Every shirt is pre-shrunk, with crack-resistant buttons and a reinforced placket and cuffs. Every style comes in XS to XXXL. You can try them on at our 110+ stores, with free alterations, and online orders come with 30-day no-questions returns.
